Pentatonic Scales And Improvisation

Volume 1

The purpose of this book is to demonstrate the versatility of the pentatonic scales in improvisation. The major and minor pentatonic scales are used frequently in Blues, Rock, and Country music. The pentatonic scales beyond these two are much less known and therefore, seldom used.  This book explores the uses of pentatonic scales beyond the common two and how they can be applied in both vertical and horizontal improvisational applications.  Scales are listed on all 12 tone centers.

The first section is on vertical (one scale – one chord) improvisational applications.  Vertical application allows a pentatonic scale to be used against an individual chord.

The second section is on horizontal (one scale used against two or more chords) improvisational applications. Horizontal application encourages the use of pentatonic scales against chord progressions.
