The Coltrane Motifs

Based on a famous John Coltrane riff in Giant Steps, I created an entire system of 4 note motifs for improvisation. This is one of the simplest approaches to the complex topic of improvisation. It works particularly well if the chords are changing rapidly.

This approach was well suited to the Coltrane classic because the chords and keys change very quickly. Many situations don’t encourage the use of a full scale because the chords go by too fast. This 4 note approach will help you through the fast changing chords.

This particular technique is very versatile and has unlimited rhythmic possibilities.The Coltrane Riffs will show you how to make music out of the small resource of 4 notes. It’s easier to finger and easier to play.

If you have trouble with your improvisation or if you are looking for a different approach to freshen up your solos, this approach can be very effective. Give it a try and see if you don’t find it leading to new sounds and newer solos.
