 Jazz Guitar Chords

Without Memorizing a 1000 Shapes

What are jazz chords? Today, it’s commonly accepted that “jazz chords” are four part chords using specific sets of four strings and that they avoid open strings. In this way, the chords are not only uniform in sound but they can also slide around the guitar to handle chord needs in various keys.

There are common string groupings that each serve different functions and produce different colors. Strings 2346 is a common form that formed the basis of the “Freddy Green” rhythm guitar style in Count Basie’s band. Strings 1234 are used in comping and in melody and chords to harmonize string one melodies. Strings 2345 are great in the Bossa style.

We’ll be studying these string groupings and how to derive chords from chords. By understanding the process of jazz chord building, you’ll be spared frustrating “shape” memorization.
