* The Art and Craft of Guitar Fingering There are six specific motion principles that control connectivity on the guitar. This program analyzes these principles and shows their application to scales, arpeggios. sequences, intervals, melodic playing, improvisation and reading. * Master Picking for Guitar Picking is one of the most difficult technical problems of the guitar. Many have presumed that alternate picking is the solution to speed. It is not. Ultimately, the picking combinations of down – down, up – up. down – up and up-down will solve the picking decisions critical to technical virtuosity. * Jazz Chords and their Applications Jazz chords refer to an organized system of advanced chord formations, based upon sets of four strings. I am currently Head of Music at the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts (LIPA), a revolutionary educational institution in the United Kingdom founded under the inspiration and auspices of our lead patron Sir Paul McCartney.

During our Autumn 1997 Semester, Chuck spent a week at LIPA lecturing on Guitar, Composition, Songwriting, Harmony, Music Direction and Music Business as our first Artist in Residence. I can think of no lecturer who has received more critical acclaim from students and more requests to return than he has. Chuck has an almost singular ability amongst contemporary music educators to balance the relevant academic knowledge with his broad based background as a performer and composer, hands-on practical and business experience which spans 4 decades and in-depth knowledge of a vast range of musical genres. Most importantly, as students will tell you, he has the “street cred” to back it all up. He has been an inspiration to untold numbers of professional musicians over the years through his teaching, publications, performances, and uncompromising dedication to music and art.

Chuck’s work has received our wholehearted endorsement and shortly after his residency at LIPA in 1997 he was nominated to LIPA’s Industry Advisory Board to counsel us on matters relating to the relevancy and content of our teaching and learning programs. Chuck is the first American nominated to the board and his appointment symbolizes a recognition of that rare combination of qualities which are so difficult to find in contemporary music education.

“Over the past week, many of you have had the opportunity to attend classes taught by Chuck Anderson. I would be interested in receiving any feedback on those sessions”

I had the chance to talk to Chuck on Friday morning about my interest in Jingles. It was simply amazing how much I learned about it in 20 minutes. After the meeting, my head was steaming and my pocket was filled with 6 pages of information on different kinds of Jingles and Chuck’s business card. I enjoyed very much that Chuck is very straight and to the point, no bla bla like many other teachers.

Nevertheless, he is still able to listen to what you want to know and provides an answer to even very individual questions. Before I finish my degree here at LIPA, I will definitely try to come up with a Jingle Demo and send it to Chuck since he offered to give me feedback. Well. anyway, I was in a good mood all Friday.

Just to say that my tutorial with Chuck was brilliant and I learnt a whole lot more about jazz which is what I’m trying to work towards because I’m generally a rock/pop player.

I found the seminar on Monday with Chuck extremely useful and very interesting. I was most impressed with his approach and overall understanding of teaching, clear and concise. Instead of centering on one stylistic theme, he discussed points relevant to the guitar in general. This is an excellent approach as no one is left feeling excluded due to taste and experience.

In the one hour long one on one session, I was given a lot of invaluable pointers and pieces of practical advice on a range of topics.

Well, I think these lectures were some of the best lectures here at LIPA so far! I especially liked the Chuck Anderson workshop. It is really good that there is some stuff now for jazz – interested musicians going on!

I think Chuck should come back and do a jazz ensemble for a whole semester. That is what everybody in the workshop agreed with !!!

I was attending the workshop Chuck Anderson did last week and I’d like to thank him again and thank you for inviting him to do that great work. I think we all learned a lot from Chuck. It was fun to play in the canteen and the response from the audience proved that it was well done.

I also think that it’s a very good idea to invite music – greats from outside LIPA so that we can learn their approach to music and their inside view of the business. If possible, please continue with that simply because it was very, very good.
